Richard R. Schramm | Family Plot, Hoke County, NC | $450, unframed $25

Richard R. Schramm has been taking pictures for over forty years, but until his retirement in 2016, after three decades of directing the education programs of the National Humanities Center,  he was unable to devote sustained attention to photography.  Now with the help of courses at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies he is using his camera to explore Southern culture with special attention to its ironies and the ways in which the past manifests itself in the present.  His work has appeared in The Oxford American; the Frank Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, and has been selected for inclusion in the South Carolina Picture Project.
